What vegetables are easy to grow for beginners?

Radish

Radishes are one of the easiest vegetables.  They grow well from seeds, and you can harvest in just 30 days.  In the gardening world, that’s a quick return for your work.

Radishes do like a lot of water, so make sure you mark where you plant them and water them if it doesn’t rain.

Don’t want a lot of radishes ready at one time?  Plant several seeds every few days for a longer growing season.  Radishes are one of the first vegetables you can plant, and you can plant them through most of the season.

Lettuce and Other Greens

If you love fresh salads, try growing lettuce, spinach, and other salad greens.  Nearly all varieties are easy to grow, and you can even get packets of mixed seeds for an instant salad mix.

Plant seeds directly in the soil; no need to start the seeds inside and transplant.  Water the seeds and starts well, and you’ll be cutting fresh greens in about 30 to 40 days.

Zucchini and Squash

Zucchini and squash are so easy to grow, you’ll be placing several on each neighbor’s porch just to get rid of it.  You can start these from seeds or buy plants.

If you start them from seeds, place two or three seeds in a small mount.  Water well and wait for the squash to grow. Check on them daily because one zucchini can go from too small to too large in one to two days.

Cherry Tomato

Regular tomatoes aren’t difficult to grow, but they need some extra attention.  Cherry tomatoes, however, are easier to grow for beginners.

Regular tomatoes are susceptible to certain diseases, but cherry tomatoes are resistant to several of those diseases.

Regular tomatoes can grow quite large, but cherry tomatoes grow to a shorter maximum height.  You will still need a tomato cage or some way to support them, but they are easier to support and grow.

Onions

All types of onions are easy to grow, but green onions are easier.  For green onions, sow the seeds directly into the soil and water well.  In about 60 days, pull the entire plant, wash, and eat.

For yellow or white onions, plant sets into the dirt.  They like soil that drains well and a lot of sun. When the leaves turn yellow and start to shrink, pull the onions and enjoy.

Peppers

Peppers are easy to grow because they are resistant to most diseases and don’t get bothered by pests like other plants do.

Start from seed inside six weeks before you want to plant or buy plants from a greenhouse because most peppers don’t do well starting from seed.

 Best Vegetables for New Gardeners

Starting a garden doesn’t have to be intimidating.  Try one or two of these easy to grow vegetables this year and add more plants with each year.  Before long, you’ll be enjoying several different kinds of vegetables all summer long.
