What to clean with this disinfectant?
I clean all high touch surfaces with it – doorknobs and light switches. I also use it in my kitchen and bathroom.
How to make my own disinfectant?
This is the exact recipe that I use to make my own disinfectant. According to guidance from the CDC 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol kills germs on surfaces.
What essential oils can I use in this spray?
For this recipe I used tea tree essential oil, I love the fresh smell. However you can use your favorite essential oil.
- eucalyptus
- cinnamon
- rosemary
- peppermint
- bergamot
- lemon
What if I can’t find rubbing alcohol?
I prefer rubbing alcohol for this disinfecting spray, but if you can’t find it you can subsitute a drinkable, grain alcohol (aka ethyl alcohol) like Everclear or Vodka. You will want to look at the proof and cut that number in half – 140 proof alcohol would equal the 70% minimum of alcohol.
Ingredients for Disinfecting Spray
- 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol
- hydrogen peroxide
- tea tree essential oil
- glass spray bottle
- funnel
How to make your own disinfectant cleaner
First gather all of your supplies.
Next add the alcohol into a glass spray bottle.
After that add in the hydrogen peroxide and tea tree essential oil to the spray bottle.
Put the lid on the bottle and shake well.
Spray to use on surfaces.

- 16 ounce bottle 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol
- 1/2 tsp hydrogen peroxide
- 1/2 tsp tea tree essential oil

Can you use it on Fabric / Clothing ?

I believe that the 70% Alcohol strength is diluted when you add the hydrogen peroxide and essential oil, bringing the alcohol strength below the CDC recommendation of 70% strength. I would like a formulation recipe which uses the same ingredients in the proper ratio in order to keep the strength at 70% . Perhaps I can use a higher strength alcohol like 90-99% strength and then diluting it with the other ingredients listed. But I’m not sure how to calculate that…
