I absolutely LOVED advent calendars when I was younger. We used to go to the local grocery store or Dollar Store and get the ones that had the pop-out window with chocolate in them. Boy, times have sure changed. These Advent calendars put my old ones to shame but they are also pretty amazing.
Advent is known as the period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas (more commonly recognized as the 1st December to Christmas Day). This is the coming of Jesus into the world. Christians use the four Sundays and weeks of Advent to prepare and remember the real meaning of Christmas.
Advent Calendars for Kids
It’s also believed that the idea for advent calendars originated when protestant families would traditionally draw a chalk line every day of the month until Christmas Eve, for religious reasons as much as it was a way of counting down the days.

In 1958 the very first chocolate advent calendar was put on the retail market and Chocoholics worldwide went bonkers!
Right now is the best time to grab your advent calendars. Some are on sale and many will be out of stock before too long. I always make sure I get my kids’ calendars before Halloween. It seems like after Halloween there is a mad dash to pick them up and at that point, the sale prices have ended and you are looking at slim pickings.
